The thin blue band at the top represents the 29 companies in the S&P 500 still reporting financial results using only GAAP accounting. The other 471 companies of the S&P 500, in bright red, are reporting their financial results using customized, “adjusted” figures instead of exclusively using Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Colors and composition are taken from a Barnett Newman "Red, Yellow, and Blue" painting.
